"Show me the manner in which a Nation or Community cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender mercies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land and their loyalty to high ideals."

Please note the next two photographs of the amazing restoration of the above headstone (# 43) of Ellen and John Lilley.

John and Ellen's Great-great-grandson, Joseph Dunn, and his wife, Jean, and granddaughter, Kathleen, hoped to do something with the above middle third of their ancestors headstone that they found laying in the cemetery. Remarkably, they found a top third of the headstone buried under the sod and then realized there was a bottom part that they dug out shortly afterwards.

With the help of their friend, Stan van derkooy, who made the stainless steel frame, they turned a broken, partial headstone into an excellent honor to their ancestors. Their extensive efforts included re-etching the written information, adding paint to improve the appearance, and gluing the headstone together to fit inside the custom-made frame.

Mr. Dunn is available to consult with anyone interested in doing restoration work on their family's headstones. Please email to this St. Columba Cemetery site (okeane.robert@gmail.com) to have Mr. Dunn's contact information forwarded to you.
